Is it possible of instead of placing a sequence of favorite positions, to place a sequence of positions (gate or cloth number)?

At strategy "Edit" form (the one where you set strategy name) change the way favorite positions are determined, set it to use "runner position" to determine favorite position.

That is the only way to do this, it will work for greyhound races e.g. trap 1 will be first favorite, trap 2 will be second favorite. This is explained in following article:

For horse races you might not get results that you are expecting, as horses usually are not listed in the same order like greyhounds so this might not work in your case.
